This is a baby squirrel that I stumbled apon one day while out scouting. I looked up and saw one large squirrel tail and 2 very small tailes. I was so excited to see them interacting with the mother. I even captured one nursing. This little one was exploring the tree branches and leaves. It was not a good time of day to shoot but my camera was in the car only yards away so I grabbed it. In the shade yet backlit. I used some fill flash but it did not fire on this image. Lots of post processing. Hope It works cause I like the capture.

I would take it for a carefully-planned setup! Lovely!!

Nice job, Cheryl. I agree with Diane, that this looks like it could have been a setup. Nice details, composition, light handled very well, and killer cute! great find. TFS

Thanks Diane. I definately got lucky as I have never seen the babies especially interacting with Mom. The light was so bad that my shuter was slow so most of the interaction shots were blurred or soft. I may be able to get away with one frame... Ill share later.

Hi John Thanks for looking and commenting. " looks like it could have been a setup" Is that a bad thing?

Hi Cheryl, the warm, dappled light works very nicely here and I like the position of the subject in frame. The 'paw to leaf' movement was perfectly timed and makes the image IMHO. The incline of the branch also adds to the content, with it's diagonal slope. I also like the light illuminating the ear, again, adds interest. Sadly the SS wasn't fast enough and yes the subject is soft, if you get that eye pin sharp the rest will follow, but that is the focus point. I might be tempted to drop the yellow and in part, the red too, but only on the subject, but personal reference. The plant growing in the branch is a little distracting for me, but part of the environment and moving position would still not have addressed this. I would tone done or remove the small highlight on the bark, between the plant & your ©, likewise the small sprout on the RH trim edge.
Set-up or not, gaining experience and practice is the way to go Cheryl IMHO.

Hi Cheryl, very nice and cute chap you got here
You might try to turn down the highlights a bit more in the leaves and a bit right in front of it's chest. I assume it is just above the 'left hand arm' of it. Not sure, but would give it a try.

Hi Cheryl - there's a cuteness factor and intimacy to the image. The baby gave you a nice pose. Good advice above about toning down the highlights.

Your exposure on this squirrel is so good and the details are just so amazing! I have never even seen a baby squirrel so good for you for making this opp happen. The environment works well here. Your PP looks great.

Hi Cheryl, looking like a set up was not meant in any negative way. What I meant was it looks as good as a studio shot. You don't always get that kind of cooperation from a squirrel. Paw position is perect as Steve has noted.

Yes, I meant it in the same way, that the difficult lighting you described was handled so well that I can't tell wasn't carefully planned! Sorry to be unclear. Definitely meant as a compliment.

Cute little thing, looks like he's examining a leaf for the very first time. I like the colors of the leaves and BG.

Love the pose, lighting/exposure and overall composition here Cheryl. Only gripe for me is the grass growing up from the bottom...

Mine too. I think it's one of those air plants on the tree bark. I gues I could remove it as well. Thanks Morkel
