This image was shot handheld as the Hawk Jumped off a lamp post about 1/2 hour before sunset.

    1DX
    500f4 II + 1.4X III
    1/2000
    f5.6
    ISO-800
Manual Mode, + 1 2/3 EValuatie metering off the blue sky.
Glad that I got a good exposure here and I like the goden light of this one.
Hadholding 700-mm is still tough, a number of he images were soft.
Cropped to about 50% of FF

    Appreciate your comments.

    Thank you

    Loi,

A couple of questions, I am thinking about purchasing the new 500MM II and the HHing ability is important and I am considering the IDX too. Do you like the combination and find the FF sensor and noise control solid?

Regarding the picture, the 50% crop of course takes a bite out of image quality but for HHing,..pretty good. Consider adjusting the composition and moving the subject out of the center. Hand Holdng 700MM is really challenging and I usually do not include the 1.4 when I holding the old 500mm,..but thats me. Nice job with the exposure techs and the capture angle is really good,..stay with it and consider a tripod with the this much FL,..keep em coming!

    Hi Jeff

handholding the bare lens 500f4 with a 1DX is pretty sweet and does not require much practice for me. With the TCs, it takes more care just to find the subject in the viewfinder. I switch back and forth between tripod and handholding. I find if I stick to one I get more keepers, but switching back and forth then I get some not so sharp images. The 1DX is fantastic in terms of noise control. You won't be disappointed.

Hi Loi, this one looks quite good - lovely light and nice flight pose. I think your biggest challenge here is the distance to the subject. Even with the best gear, it is necessary to get close enough to fill your frame with the bird. I know this is easier said than done, but it is an essential part of nature photography even with the longest of lenses. If I recall, you use LR4, so I would suggest raising the shadows slider a bit to bring out the nice detail in the underwing areas.

I hope we get a chance to go to More Mesa together before your trip. My back is healing nicely so maybe we can do that pretty soon.

    Hi Kerry

glad to hear that you are recovering nicely. Yes, closing the distance to subject is something I need to figure out. I'm at more Mesa now to check on the WTK. Slow going today. Loi

PS I'm learning photoshop CS6 now.

Nice image Loi. Agree the IQ has suffered some due to the large crop and maybe over-sharpened just a tad to make up for it. Nice angle and light though.
