Default Tetons - pastels on canvas

I have been going over some older images lately and revisited this one from the Grand Tetons four years ago. I wanted to do something simple with it and settled on the "Rough Pastels" filter in PS CS6.

It's a great scene, and I like the look you achieved with the Rough Pastels filter.

Hi, Kerry, I think that's a hard filter to use and it works really well with the image.

What a gorgeous image! Blue sky, clouds. mountains, snow, trees, water. What more could one ask for? I like the pano crop. For my taste, the filter is too strong, the texture too large and rough. I'd prefer this great image to be plain.

Here is the original image for comparison.

Thanks. I prefer the original photo over the textured one.

Kerry, it is a beautiful iconic image with and without the filter. The rough pastel version looks good here - I suspect it would make a fine canva print. I like the effect. Have you posted the original in the landscape forum?

Very nice Kerry, the use of filters is tough and you've done a good job with this effect. The original rocks.

I prefer the original, too, but I wondered how something between it and the rough pastel one would look. When I copied both versions into a single document and lowered the opacity of the one on the upper layer so it gave just a hint of the canvas texture, I liked that better than the rougher rough pastel. Of course, it's a subjective call.

Thanks for comments, much appreciated! I was hesitant to try the pastels, as I agree that it seems a bit too rough on the re-sized for web image. Dennis, I agree with you and played with opacity for a while.

John, I've been trying to muster the courage to post this in landscape as I don't have a very good track record there. I'm not much of a landscape guy but I would like to learn and that would be the place to go for sure. My biggest challenge has been just getting to the right places to take good landscape shots, but as of last week I am retired so that challenge might become less of an issue.

Wonderful reflection of the mountains & trees in the water. This is a great image to experiment with. How about a slight watercolor effect?

I like a mild texture effect --use it a lot. Wonder, were the mtns really that blue? Wow.

Thanks so much everyone! I posted the original in landscape; John did a fantastic rework of it. Check it out! I'm going to revisit the original and try a watercolor effect in DAP.

I viewed John's rework in Landscape forum. He did a nice job. I'm glad you plan to do more work on this lovely image.

Kerry, wonderful landscape and you cannot go wrong with that. I too love the original and like the processing John did in the landscape forum. I also like the idea of trying layering the pastel on the original and lowering the opacity. TFS.

Hi Kerry, I remember this one from Landscapes...I like here too with the filtering you have applied. Nice work!
