The egrets are nest-building at a local rookery and I've been practicing flight shots. This one went behind a tree to his nest so I didn't get to see what he did with this branch, but I have a feeling he got a scolding from his wife and sent back out to try again.
Canon 5D3, 600mm II, ISO 800, f/13, 1/1600 sec. Wimberley II on big Gitzo. Could have used more SS on most shots; will open up the aperture tomorrow and hope for more keepers. Center point expand AF, back button AI Servo, manual exposure.
About a 50% crop -- IQ could be better. Right wing wasn't blown out but simply no detail there. Bright light ~ 2 hrs after sunrise.
Have been having internet issues -- hope this posts OK.

Nice nest material gathering shot. The exposure looks good as do the details but the main issue for me in this shot is the amount of the bird that is shaded by the right wing. I like the flight angle and the size of the branch. Good job tracking this with that 600.
Yes to the near wing being a bit bright, but very hard subject material, heck of a branch he's carrying, all contrasting nicely against the blue sky. A slight shame about the dark shadow underwing, but a the same time quite natural
Hi Diane, thats a fair piece of nesting material, and with all those twigs, you are lucky none of them covered the eye. The angle wasnt ideal causing shadows, and trying to bring out detail there may bring out noise.
You have a lovely pose here, and the image is nice and sharp. The nesting material is a strong element of the image, and I really like it. Do wish for less shadows on the egret
