    Default Katmai Brown Bear

I decided to process an older shot with some of the new techniques I have learned. Taken in July 2010 in the Brooks Falls area of Katmai National Park, Alaska.

    Canon 7D
    300 f2.8 I plus 2x II
    1/500
    f8
    ISO 200
    EC -.33
Tripod from platform, levels, curves, luminosity masks, color adjustments, cropped for comp, Nik define.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Hi Rachel, nice to see a a departure in image content and good to see you revisiting existing image and building in what you have learnt, all good stuff.

I quite like the comp, but feel perhaps dropping the whole crop down with less above & more below might be better, but a little juggle may be required? Sadly for me, the IQ isn't really there, likewise the real detail & clarity in the subject. I'm basing this on your previous postings, therefore I think this is could well be down to what you have learnt behind camera since taking the shot, although it might also be partly due to 7D and or the application of NIK. Colour looks OK, just watch the colour in and around the bear. Based on the techs I would expect more depth/detail in the face and sharpness from eye to nose as the techs look good. Also the water in the FG seems a bit course if you know what I mean, not smooth, did you apply the NIK to this too? I might be tempted to look at the image again but without the application of NIK, although if correctly done, that is a simple switch off, leaving the rest of your hard work in tact.

Sorry don't mean to sound hard, but you have elevated the bar very high now with recently with some excellent work.

I like the image very much, I like the eye contact and the DOF. I don't know if you have any images wher he just arrived or decided to leave, a shot with one leg raised would look more dynamic perhaps.
I am not having a dig here but given that you have a decent camera and lenses and you were at ISO 200 at f8 and a pretty quick shutter speed I really wonder how the image would look with optimal raw conversion and whatever minor tweaks if necessary in Photoshop.
What do you think - would you consider posting a minimally adjusted image just to see what the difference is

Thanks guys, this was a fairly large crop for me, especially with the 7D. I agree my current stuff is much better. Just trying to mix it up a bit. Jon -I've posted other images of this bear further into the water.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Hi Rachel

I dont mind the crop so much but the IQ kills it for me... I agree that 'more water' 'less grass' might be better but I think that's because the IQ of the grass is poor and there is quite a lot of it. I have looked at some of my old 10D stuff, its good to do because it helps justify the expense of the new gear..!

Good to see you "mixing it up" Rachel, but I have to agree with Steve, this isn't up there with your recent postings.
I would tone down overall brightness/luminosity as well, and try to get the bear to pop more from the BG grass through selective adjustments...
