The GGO is a tame species to begin with, so a couple of times when they were perched lower I was able to approach (slowly and respectfully) to within full-frame head portraits. Awesome stuff to see those eyes from so close...spine tingling really. There a couple I like, but this slightly lowered head angle is my favorite pose for this species.

    Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/500s., f/8, ISO 800, natural light, handheld.

Amazing portrait. You are the master of 100-400L. Everytime when I hear Canoon shooter that hates this lens, I think about your images.
Love everything about it, the intense look and feather details.

    Daniel:

That facial disc, the yellow eyes and bill, make for a powerful, in your face portrait.

Totally! How often does one get to see a frame-filling portrait like this? Not often enough!

Spectacular portrait of a beautiful bird! The very tight crop really makes those yellow eyes intense! What a wonderful experience.

Hi Dan, lots of detail to look at, and wish I could come close to one of these wonderful owls. Love the matching yellow eyes and beak.

Impressive face, great eyes and details, beautiful portrait. I don't know why people hate the 100-400 lens. It is a great tool in the good hands and you prove it all the time to us with your photography.
