I think these are pretty ugly birds unless you get the light just right on them, and then they are beautiful with their iridescent rich colors. I shot this early Sunday morning at a local wetland area. Unfortunately, the pond they were in didn't provide much in the form of a nice background. I tried to minimize the distraction of it with some blur, but I still wish it was cleaner. There was also a little bit of motion blur. I had my ISO set for 400, but should have bumped it up. I'll try again soon for a better shot (hopefully they'll still be there), but still liked the way the light hit on this one, showing the pretty feather colors. All tips, suggestions, and comments are welcome and appreciated. I still have a LOT to learn! Techs: Nikon D7000/500mm f/4-P, 1.6x TC, tripod/gimbal head @ 1/200, f/8, ISO 400.
*This looks a lot brighter here than on my monitor. Does it look too bright?

Hi Jeannean , I don't feel it's too bright . If it were mine ,I would do some burning of the Bg. The way I tend to do that is by selecting the bird and putting it on a separate layer and darking the copy layer of the original .I try to never do any adjustments on the original layer ,so I copy > make the selection >copy that> burn or adjust the copy of original. BTW ,Have you read Denise's Clone and Defend file ? I received in in a News letter from her a good while back , so I would assume It is on here ,I'm just too lazy to look right now lol. Of Course I believe you Know all of this and have for some time now .
,But may-be some who come here will get something from it .
Thanks Clyde. I haven't read Denise's clone and defend. I did a search on here for it, but didn't find it. I'll keep looking. On a duplicate layer, I burned the mid-tone's about 6% in the upper part of the background. I have struggled with processing this image more than most. Your suggestion helped, so thank you for that. I hope I get another opportunity for a "re-do", since I'm not entirely happy with this image, but we take what we get sometimes and have to make the best of it. Here's a redo of the one I have with the mid-tone burn.
