Gadwall
First proper outing with my recently purchased 500mm lens. I'm really liking it and getting used to lugging it around on a tripod. Hope you like this Gadwall image from today. It wasn't the best of light and it refused to come in close. Id really appreciate your comments as always.
Processed in LR4 and PSE10, USM 0.2,120. Canon 7D, 500mm + 1.4x, 1/640, f7.1, ISO400 +1/3 ev

Hi Simon, providing this isn't a huge crop, the image looks a little soft. If the focus point is on the eye and at that f-stop, the detail & clarity should be there. Also perhaps a 16 x 9 format might work better, as it's tighter and with the water line on the third it just helps things up IMHO. BTW the image has an untagged profile, just check your settings.

out of interest, typically how far are ducks away from you before you take the shot. Not sure of distance to this subject but the crop is probably 30% of the original image.

Hi Simon, when you save an image for web the profile is sRGB as you know, however your image has an untagged profile and it may look a tad more saturated. Just check that you "Convert to profile' under Edit in PS where you change the Destination space to sRGB and that the correct boxes are checked in Save for Web, I bet one of those boxes that is unchecked.Hope this helps.

Hopefully this might be better. I think it should have the profile. Not sure what happened to the first image as you're right it does look very soft. This repost looks a lot better I think

I worked out the crop of this photo and it turns out that this image is only 23% of the original photo which is crazy. I think I will not bother taking anything at that distance before. Even at 700mm on ducks like these its made me realise that you still need to be close to the bird to get the best image.
