This raptor was perched in woodland habitat along Egan's Greenway (follows Egan's Creek) in Fernandina Beach, Florida on 12-27-12. At first I assumed that it was an Accipiter, but the head markings, brown eye, orange barring, and length of the tail made me wonder. The crown and back feathers are patterned, not gray as one would expect from a Cooper's or Sharpie. Could this bird be a Red-shouldered Hawk? Is it correct that unlike other Buteos, they are perch hunters?
