Another image of the baby sloth from Costa Rica. I had already put away my camera per the request of my husband but as soon as the sun went down he started to move up the tree. I quick ran back down the 100 steps to my room and grabbed my camera and flash ran back up the 100 steps and returned before it was completely dark. No time for tripod or much preparation but I think I pulled it thru.

Hi Cheryl - you've actually made a sloth look cute. I like the lines of the branches leading to the sloth. It does look flashed but not much you can do about that. Similarly, the leaf behind the head is not ideal but nothing you could really do, it's nature. Sharpness and detail look good. I see a little noise in the bg, particularly the llc so I would run some NR selectively on the bg. Well worth running back to your room for the camera.

Cheryl, Rachel makes some good points. I really like the detail & how the sloth is wrapped around the branches. The noise does not bother me. I like this image a lot. TFS.

Hi Cheryl, I also like the image in composition, placement of the sloth - which I agree you make look attractive here. I took a shot at keeping the eye on the subject by reducing the brighter distractions in the BG. I made a quick shot at it in Viveza with control points that reduced the brightness of leaves, and in the case of the red vertical stalk to the right, brightness, and reduction in red channel. Compositionally they are more subtly in support.

I also added an additional copyright with your name, since my adjustment pretty much obliterated yours.

Nice work John. That looks great. The tree now has more depth also. Thanks much

    Hi Cheryl,

lovely image of the sloth. I like your comp. Here I might brighten the BG a bit and darken the highlights in the fur, which stand out from the flash I assume. I pulled it over in PS and tried it works fine for me.
The draw back is that you have to do more NR in the BG, but that can be accomplished

    Ciao

Hi Cheryl, I think this one is the better of the two because the subject is looking directly to the viewer and I like the linkage.

Regarding firstly the crop, I like it as presented, but also I wonder if you were to move the whole crop to the left by about a third of the space between subject and trim so it's more to the left just to balance the RHS???? I like what John has done and spot on with his observations. Darkening the brighter foliage/vegetation can all be done in ACR where you can be far more selective and you are working on the RAW, not a TIFF so you are not 'pixel bashing' and therefore the IQ is going to be better. I also like the way he has added more tone to the subject, you may find a Luminosity mask may help here, it just helps the brighter parts again, although there other ways too to adjust this, it just depend on how comfortable you are in PS and I know you are still feeling your way around things so keep things simple. Re the BKD and the noise, treat it in the same way as your Giraffes that worked. Again in John's RP he has brought more depth & detail back into the branches which really helps, as per my comment on your last image too, but the branch that runs to 1 o'clock looks a little odd, there seems to be a greater loss of DOF compared to the others. I know it's running back and further away, but I'm surprised to the amount and to such a degree, probably optical.

Try your flash around f/7.1 and cranking p the ISO so you get a SS of 1/250-300 this should help if you are HH rather than on a tripod.

Great discussion and suggestions already on this one. Good going, team!
Cheryl, I like how John and Anette brought out more depth and reduced the "flashed" look. A very cute critter indeed.
I'm in the mood to experiment so I might try my hand at a monochrome version sometime tonight...
