Made a return trip to the Bronx Zoo yesterday to enjoy the warmer weather and also to play with my new 300 2.8 and monopod. The gorillas are often so expressive and humanlike.

    Canon 5d3
    300 II
    1/400
    f5.6
    ISO800
Monopod, cropped and converted to b&w, added sepia toning, luminosity masks, levels, curves, selective dodging and burning and sharpened in CS6.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Very nicely shot, composed, and processed. Great title, too. With the pose, there's a wonderful flow to the image that keeps attention on the gorilla and within the frame. The sepia toning is subtle but adds a nice bit of warmth.

You captured a very emotional pose, one that really makes me think about gorillas in captivity as well as the plight of the remaining gorillas in the wild. What are their thoughts? Very nice play of light and shadows, capturing great details on the fur.

Sometimes I look at these animals and wonder, just what are they thinking. Are they depressed, happy, bored or content. A nice capture, looks good in B & W..well done

Rachel, very expressive. They are so human that it breaks my heart to see them in captivity (or threatened in the wild). I think they are human enough to be depressed. Nicely captured. I think I would prefer thewhole image to be just a little darker but that's just my own opinion. I was playing around with the image and used Nik Color Efex to create a vignette - both darker and slightly blurred. Not better than your OP but a little different.
