Both the oystercatchers and as many as 40 Marbled Godwits have been chowing down on these little arrow-shaped invertebrates for the past week or so. If you know what they are I'd love to know.

With the Canon 600mm f/4L IS lens, the 1.4X III TC, and the EOS-1D X. ISO 400. Evaluative metering at zero: 1/2000 sec. at f/7.1.

Hi Artie, being from the cold north I would not have a clue on the prey. But, I like the low angle feeding that you were able to get here. The water droplets between the beak are pretty cool. IQ is excellent.

No idea on the prey but it adds interest as does the trailing water. Pleasing image.

Light, exposure, and soft powdery colors on the water and backdrop all very good as is the action with prey. Obviously I have little idea what may be in the beak, but it looks a little like the very young stage of a Razor shell

Excellent exposure and details. Love the bird angle and placement. The open bill with the flying droplets and the food make this image for me. The non-water fg adds a little more interest and depth.

Nice work on this one. Oystercatchers, along with skimmers (black, white, red), are a real challenge to expose properly. 'Interested in what the prey is too. It looks like super shallow water. Hmmmmm...

Thanks all for your kind comments. Someone on the blog suggested lancelet. Phil about suggested a larval stage of razor clam. I am not even sure now that it is an invertebrate.... I will send the image to a contact at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and see if I can find out for sure.
