Finally managed to get out today and found this adult male Crescent HE this morning preening up a tree in nearby bushland, an unexpected opportunity but lucky the camera was in my vehicle. Not uncommon here in Adelaide Hills region, but they have a rather small range in southern Australia and a clear shot of one is not often achieved. This one in the centre of a Gum tree and only one angle of approach to get a shot with no twigs or branches.
So named because of the Crescent shaped markings on the chest and a nectar feeder
Canon 7D + 500 f4 + 1.4 x TC.....700mm, f5.6, 1/500, ISO 800, no flash, manual exposure, hand held.....cropped to vertical to remove surrounding twigs either side of bird, selective sharpen and noise reduction to background, cloned out one brighter leaf below bird
Phil
This is a lovely bird, i understand the problem bird provide when they are in a tree and getting a clear image is always a challenge
I like the details on the bird very nicely focused and the details in the black and grey are lovely,
Thanks for letting us know the info about the bird and why its called so, you have presented the crescent also nicely, i love the eye of the bird here.
wonderful image
Congrats on getting a nice clear shot of this species, Phil. One of many Aussie species I've never seen before. Great detail, and the eye and signature crescents show up nicely. The bird seems a bit centered in the frame, but that's a product of his pose. It might be possible to take a slivver off the right and add a corresponding bit to the left, but probably not worth it.
That's a lovely pose as is, and great details on the bird. I love the eye, and the splash of yellow on the wing that complements the otherwise black, white and gray bird very well. Well done with the bg, cloning, and overall effect.
I love the red eye and yellow wing. The vertical composition you present us is tastefully cropped. Neat BG here, just wondering if you could tone down a few of the brighter spots in it.
Nice shot of a unique species I have never seen before. Exposure and feather detail look great. Love the red eye and the shot looks good for a large crop. Wouldnt have known if you hadnt mentioned it. Nice..
