Almost Full frame, an exceptionally aggressive Coyote in my local refuge today.
He was actually coming towards me, I clipped the image as I was panning and stood up so he would back off.
I was going to just delete it, but sort of liked the clipped frame, grass and all.

Dan, its interesting the grass is blurry as if you did a pan shot and the posture of the coyote suggesting motion. I like it.

Interesting approach but the eyes look soft to me.

Hi Dan - It's always nice to see a coyote and you got a nice pov and eye contact. Too bad about the grass right in front of the nose but that's nature. Hopefully, his aggressiveness doesn't get him in trouble. The cropped legs weren't really working for me so I took it into PS and played with the crop. I also thought there was a slight yellow cast so I dropped the yellows a bit and then also adjusted the blacks and midtones on the coyote in levels masking out the bg (pulling the left slider to the right 12 pts and the middle slider to the right 4 points). Finally, since I had cropped it smaller I added another round of USM. Obviously, it would be much better to do these adjustments to the tiff file (and won't degrade the IQ as much).

    Rachel

    Thanks for the comments.
    Rachel,
I like your crop, these kind of photo's are a tough comp for me.
I like the legs for the sense of motion, but I also like your close up.
    Nice I can do both.
I should have sharpened more, I barely sharpened at all.

Hi Dan, I like the idea of trotting, but for me, the image needed to be smaller in frame to show the whole body/action and so the crop isn't really working for me, especially with the loss of the feet. Looking at Rachel's RP I think it addresses my concerns and makes more of a portrait. I also feel it looks quite vivid in the greens and there is quite a bit of yellow coming through, perhaps neutalising the whites a bit may help and just toning down the greens a fraction more? Getting a bit more tone/detail in the head will also help things. The head, or parts of the face ie eyes really do need to be crisp and sharp, as that is what grabs/locks the viewer and so applying a bit more selective USM may help, as ALL digital images need sharpening, and will vary from image to image give or take.

A little late to this but Steve took the works right out of my mouth, so very good advice offered by him.

Dan, also late to this (though I did view it earlier on). For me the OP isn't doing much for many of the reasons mentioned above. Rachel's crop is better IMHO.
Steve brought up some good points on the balance of colour in the shot.
Did you get any vertical/portrait shots?
