The male of this species has a spectacular scarlet backside, but on this trip he stayed out of range of my camera. This female, however, gave me a nice pose, good eye contact and a pleasant, if not uniform, background. Photographed in northern Costa Rica last month on workshop with Greg Basco and Doug Brown. Birds were attracted with ripe bananas.

Very nice, the mossy perch gives a good indication of the environment and the quality of light on the perch and head region of the bird is extra good, eye is excellent imo, but I wonder if the bird itself could do with a little more lighting on the chest and rump, either way this one is rather nice as is
Really nice Bill.
I like the perch and the pose.
The light is very typical of rainforest light so am OK with the darker conditions.
Really like the little plant below the feet.

Excellent coposition. I like the inclusion of the textured plant material on the right. I also like the light and the bird is nicely posed and sharp. Looks like a big tanager similar to our endemic Flame-rumped.
I love the way the diagonal perch runs in the frame, this perch is something i may love to carry with me all around
The bird is alert and that makes it very nice frame, the vertical separation in the BG work here
lovely image
Well exposed & composed, lovely pose, I like the two toned background. Can't fault it, I particularly like the impression of slightly uneven lighting that would be the norm.
Bananas sure did the trick. One heck of a shot. the perch, balance, jungle feel, details....everything is awesome. Excellent techs as well. Well done, Bill.
Hi Bill. This bird gave you a very nice pose! I also like the light, perch, comp, and background. The eye, beak, and feet seem to be sharp, but for some reason the feathers appear to be lacking the detail I would expect to see. Not sure what the issue is that is causing this ?? Other than that, the image is first rate!
