The tufted duck hopped out of the water to preen on a very thin film of ice. The blue in the BG is the hull of a fishing boat.

I like this one a lot. The blue in the BG and the reflection of it in the ice complements the subject very well. Great sharpness, and the ice actually reflected light onto the belly of the duck. The eye is stunning. Very well Done Gail.

    Oh yes, really great title!

The pose and crop are nice. I like the reflection. I did look twice at the BG but seems to blend nicely with the water and the blue works nicely with this bird.

I was going to comment that it was too blue until I re read your description about the Boat being the BG.
It does make for an interesting BG but it also sort of overwhelms the bird for me.
IQ as usual is very nice.

Interesting BG and you used it well. I like that you can see the horizontal line of the ice and hints of purple and green on the duck. Lucky you that he climbed out of the water. Most of the images we see are swimming. Is this duck a regular visitor to your area?

Cute pose on this duck especially the stubby tail, and light looks good too, although just hinting on blowing the whites on the wing and maybe a little more detail could be brought out in the blacks. I confess to not being very fond of the backdrop, maybe nicer if some of the lines etc were smoothed out, as it it almost looks like a piece of plastic tarpaulin.

    Hi Marina,
No. he is a fairly rare visitor and it was the first time I have seen a tufted duck. He hung around for about a week with a raft of greater scaup,

I might have seen this image before but I'm not sure, Gail. Great image, love the pose and seeing the duck out of the water.

Nice view of this local rarity, and I'm with Marina about seeing it out of the water! The yellow pops nicely. I like the hue of the BG, but not so much the texture...but once identified as what it is it's better to the mind...if that makes sense?

Nice one, the tuft is nicely visible making it interesting, the eye nicely exposed adds a lot of interest.
Its very nice use of boat hull as the bg ,

Hi Gail, great low angle of capture, and you seem to have exposed this very well, with what seems like a difficult character to expose with the darker plumage of blacks and purples. The eye just screams pop - love it against the purple sheen. Great work on using a boats hull as a BG, works big time for me. An opportunity well used.

Pretty neat to see and capture him standing on ice. I like the crispness of the ice and the ducks feet. Great job getting the purple tones in the head

Awesome image! In every regard...light quality, composition, details...etc. One of the coolest
images I've seen of this species.
