    Jonathan,
I love the way the bird is photographed here, i see everything right here, including the bg
the only nit can be the perch (manmade) but then we cant really control the situation every time, the bird is so beautiful that it does over power the perch in here, so i love it

The bird looks great so is the background, Jonathan. To minimize the effect of the perch, I would clone out the part crosses the tail, down to the first barb.

Hi Jonathon...what a beautiful siskin and photograph. I don't mind the barbed wire perch at all, in fact it is great because it doesn't compete with the subject, but IMO complements it. Great sharpness, pose, HA, and BG. Very well done!

Lovely shot, nice and sharp and a great background. I don't mind the barbed wire as a perch and have used it myself, although I don't tend to show he ends.

I love the rusty Barb Wire perch especially with the nice curve, and impressive lack of noise straight out of camera. Cant really see anything I would alter, lovely photography Jonathon

I never thought I would say this but I really like this rusty perch. I like how the end curves upward.
I like the ying and yang of soft and hard .
Bird looks great and lovely BG.
    Really like this image,
    Gail

The bird looks great! As man-made perches go, this one is pretty cool. I do wish that it continued through the entire frame though.

Thanks for the comments everyone, the barbed wire was deliberately positioned, the other finches were perching nicely on the end making for lovely portrait style images, I quite like the rusty wire and because it is twisted it implies to me it is a broken fence.

    Jon:

Other than wishing he was angled a bit more our way, I really like this one. Interesting concept about the broken fence. The wire certainly has lots of character. Having grown up in farming country, I don't have a lot of love for barbed wire, nasty stuff to work with and run into.

The bill looks a bit blurry, possibly a little motion effect?

    Cheers

Not a fan of the barbed wire perch but this one is pretty cool with the rusty texture and bend it has to it. Hey nice looking bird too :)

Well done, Jonathan. The perch is beautiful and most complimentary to your charming siskin. I tend to prefer man-made perches over natural perches, particularly when they're rusty and rich with character. I'd love to see some more from this series, it sounds like you had a most rewarding "session"...

While I see Randy's point, I really love this one. I would not change a single perch pixel. And the bird as noted is super-sharp.

My problem is the darker in front/lighter in back background. The eye is always drawn to light areas and in this case the light area drags the eye away from the subject..... There is a good chance the perch placement was the guilty party....

It's a great photo as is. Sharp and a great BG. Would have been much nicer with a natural perch. Fine job.

I totally agree to the fact that the perch is very complimentary here. Lovely composition overall. TFS.

Another one that likes the barbed wire perch. In my area it is the norm. Exposure and feather details look great and the BG is nice and smooth. Well done.

Thanks very much everyone for your comments. The perch tends to be something we like or we don't, and I respect the differing viewpoints.
The background - yes Artie you hit the nail on the head, I was positionally set up to be taking images of birds on the left hand side of the feeder, the barbed wire was on the right side. It was fortuitous that the birds were landing on this part, this bit was just an overhang from the supporting structure. The other end of the wire has something else going on....... I will post when 24hr have elapsed
