Congratulations on your new to you lens! I witnessed this same courting behavior the other day at my local pond. I was wondering why the female was staying in that position with a wild-eyed stare while he was blowing bubbles and walking in circles around her. When he jumped on top, I then knew. I like your comp, low perspective and you handled the exposure well. Not the easiest to do with these black/white birds. Nicely done!
Thanks, Jeannean. Yes, I have the whole courtship sequence. Avocets have a very similar behavior pattern. When the female gets low with that beak, you have a couple of minutes to get ready.
I really like this picture,..might add a bit more canvas on the right and take a slight layer off and clean up the bottom edge a bit but that is totally subjective. I notice a bit of dark on the top edge too, I always walk around the entire frame and try to ensure all edges are clean as possible and blends with the image,..but that me.
This is good Ian,..very good your lens technique is excellent and you know how to work a subject,..very good!!!
as you get better the critiques get stronger,...keep em coming you have a great kit and eye.
ps,..notice leaving room for the virtual feet balances the image,..it has harmony. Of course, every shot has its own fingerprint but with subjects and courtship, I leave room to breath in the frame on all sides.
