I just love kingfishers. Even though they're small, they've got a ton of attitude! Very nicely exposed, wonderful colors, head angle, and nice detail. If you have some room underneath the perch, I might add some to help balance out the frame (where the perch just kind of disappears and the imaginary tail is cut off). I think some noise reduction on the background would smooth it out and make it less distracting. Like I said, I love kingfishers and yours is a beauty!

Jerry, I like this version a LOT! The background now looks great, and with just a bit of space underneath the perch, it balances better to my eye. Wonderful job!

Jerry,
What a great picture, well done. The bottom of the frame is the main opportunity here. I would minimize the perch and remove the empty space beneath. This distract the eye IMO the foreground should transition and here i find myself looking underneath the branch to see whats there.
I like the OP and would further reduce the perch in the bottom left hand corner (that open space is called a triangle and we try to eliminate when possible). Use the piece of paper drill, lay a piece of notebook paper over the screen and review crop and subject placement options until the image finds balance. The subject is amazing, just look at that eye and thevbeautiful color - nice field technique with a beanbag. Thanks for sharing, great subject.

Jeff,
Yeah, as I commented 3 posts up, I liked less space on the bottom of the frame as well (although I'm always open to suggestions).
IMHO, Jeannean's suggestion of making the background less busy was a good one. Comments on that?
Also, do you have a link where I can learn about the "piece of paper drill"? I normally just move the crop box around in Lightroom until it's pleasing to my eye.

Jerry- This is one of the best portraits of a Belted Kingfisher I have seen. They tend to be very skittish and it's hard to cover them with a lot of pixels, as you have done here. The repost looks great. I would just remove the little stick at the bottom right.

Agree with John.... this is a fab shot of a really "skittish" bird. GREAT WORK! I like the RP.... but think the OP without the extra space under the perch works better...Great detail... totally love the "bad hair".... Superb capture of a VERY pretty girl!

Jerry, to be honest I barely noticed the perch as my jaw dropped when I saw such a detailed image of this bird. This one is high on my nemesis list with only a few heavily cropped images to show for it. Excellent work!

Thanks to all for the suggestions and kind words on this shot.
I, too, have been frustrated in getting a sharp Kingfisher capture. I remember one day watching a Kingfisher perch on a stick in the water. I'd slowly approach that stick in my car, only to spook the bird. Then I'd see him (her?) in my rear view mirror in a leafless tree, so I'll slowly backup only to scare him back to the stick. Well, I repeated this routine for about an hour, finally surrendering to bird, without a decent shot.
For some reason, this little gal wasn't shy at all - almost an exhibitionist. I was so happy to grab this capture.
