    Default Which Juvenile Oriole

    Taken 8/14/12 in RGV

I have both the Altamira and Hooded Oriole feed at my feeder, so which juvenile Oriole is this?

    Nikon D90, 300mm, ISO 800, 1/500 at f/2.8, hand held.

Hi CM- I have no experience with either species but am pretty good at interpreting what field guides have to say. My "go-to" guide is Sibley. He describes Altamira as having a very thick bill and short tail. I think your bird has neither. He also shows 1st year birds with black eye-patch, throat and upper breast, and notes that sexes are similar. I therefore conclude that your bird is not Altamira. If Hooded is your alternative, I would say this one is a Hooded. The distribution and your location look good for this species.
