Mallard drake portrait
Recently I received Arties Digital Basics tutorial and I wanted to find a suitable shot to try out a number of the techniques. I thought this one was good to try out a number of the great stuff he teaches
Due to the recent strong rains, I have been coming across ducks even up in the hills. I guess they are using puddles for swimming
A while into the hike this drake popped up in between the bushes and gave me just enough time to take a few shots.
The drake had a bush covering the front part of its breast and another big bush to the left of the shot.
Managed to clone these out. removed some bright areas and toned down the general tone of the background
Brightened the blacks and toned down the whites to get more detail.
NR on background and slight NR on bird
Sharpened after resizing (pretty hefty crop)
Not sure about the sheen on the head and neck, but in the sunlight its actually how it looked to me
Nikon D7000

Lots to like here. Nice look back pose and lovely bg. Duck is nice and sharp although IQ may be suffering some from large crop. Sheen looks great to me. Personally I am not too keen on that large oof rock even though that is where the bird is at. Well done and looking forward to more.

Image optimization looks fine. BKGR looks great. As Dave mentioned, the big problem here is with the oof rock.... Most anything this side of the subject that is oof will be an image wrecker.

Your duck looks awesome and love that look back pose. The BG is lovely and a perfect backdrop for the bird. You did a very good job with what you had to work with and it's nice to hear that you are working on your photoshop skills.
