    Default Landing Egret

A stand of 20 trees rise In a marsh in southwestern Louisiana. A rookery of roseate spoonbills and egrets has been established there for several years.

My photos of this rookery, taken in bright afternoon sunlight, remind me of how grateful I was (and am) for Artie's IPT with the white birds of the Bosque. Before that workshop I blew the exposure on every white bird in sunlight!

    Hi Gayle,

The wings details are simply amazing!! good job on that. With that said, I find the branch behind the Egret a huge distraction. I would like to see this image in horizontal, I don't think vertical works.

I like the image and esp. the VERT format. I could live with or without the branches behind the bird. Not sure why but they are just not distracting to me. Sharpness and EXP perfect, and I love the bird itself. Can anyone age this bird? Absolutely love the pose and the head angle.

    Question Age of bird?

    Hi Artie,

I hope I don't embarass myself with my guess, but I'll take a stab at it and guess that it's a year old or less, due to the pale color of the legs and the wing feathers that appear to have not filled all the way out yet.

Close Tim, actually the bird has just left the nest: the deep orange/yellow bill with the black tip and the greenish tint at the bend of the underwings are diagnostic. I believe that the green is from the feather sheaths.

Thank you for the comments, everyone. Artie knows his birds! Several of this year's hatchlings were already flying and returning to the trees to roost.

stunning detail in the whites Gayle......the ONLY branch that is distracting for me is the one intersecting the leg joints.
I rather like the few branches behind the head

    Gayle,

I too like the vertical format, as presented. Love the pose.

    Respectfully,

    Chas
