Default Owl coming right at you in last light

This is one of my fav. wing position for the great grey, you can get this when the owl is coming right at you. I also liked the cattails which are a part of the habitat.

    Attachment 125349

1DX 300 f/2.8 II f/4 1/1600sec ISO 5000. The 1DX showed exceptional AF and high ISO performance. you can see how the focus has perfectly remained lock dead on the head despite the cat tails getting in the way, I had many frames in the sequence where the head was partially blocked by the cattails but that did not disturb the focus . It remained locked on the head as I tracked the owl down to MFD before I had to dock At this distance and shallow DOF the image will be a delete if focus is not dead on the head.

With the MK4 ISO 3200 was a stretch while with the 1DX ISO 6400 requires little NR to clean up the noise. Detail is just fantastic. I'm loving this body!

Here is a HD file to inspect facial details.

Many thanks to Dan for making my trip extremely productive

I Like the dreamy feel created by the snow and oof cat tails. I thought this field made a perfect back drop myself. Ideally would have liked to have not seen the tail merged with the wing.

Another lovely GGO shot. Amazing for an ISO of 500.
I like this one but prefer the others on your website. I find my eye is dragged down to the smudge area of cattail below right foot and up an inch from the bottom of the frame.
Love the cattails and the band of grey and peach at the top.

Love the way you can see the mechanics of the wing upstroke because of the slight blur.

As with the other shots, great details on the bird. Not too sure about the 2 cat tails directly beneath its talons.

Are you keeping the minimum focussing distance set to 3m or do you turn it off so it focuses as close as possible?

you always use far focus range for flight.

Ok thats what i do. Thanks.

Was just wondering if in certain cases where the birds can fly at you you would remove it.

Birds never fly to you that close unless they want to attack you, you will clip most of the bird anyway.

Hi Arash, exceptional stare from the GGO, and love the symmetry of the wings. The GGO certainly pops from the BG, and the cattails add interest. Well captured.

An amazing shot, Arash. agree that AF is so crucial in this situation. Loved that head. I also liked the blur in the wings in this one. Makes it very unique. Snow always adds a ton.

We got some really pretty settings in that spot indeed. Neat wing position and head-on flight path. Too bad the taller cattail is so close to the foot, but not an image killer by any means. Such clean files at these higher ISOs!

I don't recall ever seeing a ggo image with the cattail habitat. I really dig that.
