I shot this gal using the 1D Mark IV, 300 + 2X TC, ISO 800, f/8.0, 1/2000. Tripod and gimbal head. Wish I had better light but wasn't to be. C&C greatly appreciated.

    Don,

Flight images are always interesting to me; I love shots that depict the power and motion of flying. The main opportunity here is the light, it is coming from the left side of the frame and not behind you. A more powerful image could be a well lit face and and clean sharp eyes. As you can tell shadows cover the majority of the subject and the image lacks some critical detail. Nice field technique using a tripod with 600mm of FL,..I am curious was this a large crop? I do like the tail fan and folded wings,..look for ways to add detail: faster shutter, tripod technique, smaller crop, better light and of course get closer to the subject - easier said than done but strong images usually involve planning and strong image quality - keep em coming!!!

    Jeff,

Actually, on this shot I believe the sun was coming from the right side of the frame. Where this was shot, lighting tends to be difficult. I only cropped a small bit off the right side and a bit off the left to try and get close to the rule of thirds. The bird is the actual size as shot. I knew the light was quite the challenge but could only work with what I had. I appreciate the comments and will continue field techniques.

Yes right, you get my point the shadows are covering too much of the subject IMO. As I always say we shoot the light not the subject and you mentioned this in your self critique - so it goes. The IQ is an opportunity as well and if this is a small crop then practice tripod techniques (have you seen James' thread on that subject in the education and tutorial forum) - I often reference it myself.

The opportunities here are light and critical detail - keep em coming.
