Smooth Billed Ani
Hi all,
Further to Kerry's fantastic photo of a raven with stunning detail, I got inspired to post this shot of detail in the blacks with side lighting. You can see the position of the sun relative to my position if you look at the eye.

7D | 400mm | 1/640s | f/7.1 | ISO 500 | Fill flash (to open up the shadows on the back of the neck) @ -2/3
Not usually a fan of square crops, but this is the version that the bird seemed to fit in the best. Also - should I have taken out the extra catchlight (from the flash)?
All C&C welcome :-)

I like the shot Faraaz. Never seen this bird before so could not comment on the colour but there is plenty of detail beak to tail.
Not so sure about the fuzzy section on the ground in front of the bird and if that can be fixed somehow
-
Shane, thanks. The fuzzy section is OOF vegetation that was in front the bird :-(.

Fantastic shot Faraaz. Love the detail you got in the all the black feathers. The vegetation blur is a little distracting. I am sure there is some technique that one of the more experienced folks on here can suggest for removing it? Good exposure for a dark subject like this.

Nice job Faraaz, and thanks for adding to the examples of detail in the blacks! You have a very nice capture with excellent detail in the dark plumage. I would definitely remove the smaller catchlight. Well done and a really interesting bird. Thanks for sharing!

Nice job with this bird Faraaz! Love the pose and light. Very difficult to get a clear shot of these birds around here, so congrats for getting one in the open.

Faraaz,
I do enjoy the side lighting of this ani. The copper iridescence and texture really pops.

Hi Faraaz, very interesting looking bird and fantastic detail in the plumage! With the distracting blur in the foreground I'm wondering if it would work to use a blur tool on the strip of vegetation at the bottom of the image so that it blends in. Then if the slightly blurred 'triangular' grass in front of the bird was removed it might even up the blur nicely across the image. Happy birding, Kim :)

Hey Kim - that's actually a pretty good unique idea - never thought of that! Thanks for your suggestion!
