The Booted Racket-tail was one of my favorite Ecuadorian hummingbirds. These little guys have huge personalities and were a joy to watch and photograph. I couldn't have gotten this shot without the knowledge and assistance provided by Glenn Bartley on his Ecuador workshop.
What a spectacular image! Love those plumes flying on the HB. The BG is lovely. Wish the flower were a little smaller and not quite so powerful in the frame so that the HB would stand out a little more.
I have to say I like this with the flower being so much larger than the bird. It shows more how small this hummer is. The pose is over the top and the tecs are great. Congrats to this fantastic picture.
What a wonderful shot.
At first, I thought the flower was too big and overwhelmed the bird but the more I look at it I like how you have shown how smell the hummer is.
I really like the flying tail and the curves of the tail feathers.
A keeper for sure,
Gail
This is an excellent capture, James. Perfectly designed and executed. The bird is simply gorgeous, and I like the flower too.
I feel that the flashed look can be reduced somewhat. Here's an attempt. Hope you don't mind.
I reduced highlights and added a warming filter. Reducing highlights added slight banding in the bg in the LRC. This would likely not when working on a hi res file.
Looking forward to more from your trip.
Hi James, just love the hovering pose of the HB, and that trailing tail puts this up a few notches. I do like how we can see the green iridescence on the HB, and blue iridescence on the tail. Im 50/50 on the size of the flower, but it does remind me of a venus flycatcher - just waiting for the HB to come in a little closer and then getting 'gobbled' up. I like Sid's subtle repost.
Very nice image, James. I like the pose of the bird and the nice background. The flower looks great too but I feel that it is somewhat over powering in the frame.
Took a second look at this amazing image. I love it through and through with the flower large in the frame. It gives a different perspective. I would hope to have one with a smaller flowerr so that it will be more about the HB than the flower. That said, for this image, I like the flower just as it is and I agree with Gail about how it really emphasises the small size of the HB .
