Default Backyard Bird #5 - Northern Cardinal female

OK, so the Great Backyard Bird Count is over, but I thought I'd post just one more for good measure. The Northern Cardinal pair has been the most regular and longstanding of our backyard friends. I cringe each time I see a Cooper's Hawk dive into their protective bush looking for lunch; but so far they have remained unscathed. I know I need to start looking for a new perch; this one's a little worn. But I hope the snow helps to mitigate that. Taken a few days after Christmas.

Perch looks good to me Bill. A really nice look back pose with the nice long view of the bird. My eyes wonder if the cardinal good be just a bit brighter. Lovely colors. Very nice.

I like the pose, HA, sharpness, snow on perch and details. I will have to check out your series. Nice image Bill!

Looks very nice, Bill. Love the snow on the perch, the looking back pose with the raised crest. Slightly angled perch would have been better if you have had control over. If it was a natural perch than that's what you got.

Really nice raised crest and DOF. Excellent IQ.
Like the snow and the lichen on perch.
I agree with Karl. If this was a setup I wish the perch had been set up diagonally.
Or you could rotate the image a bit to tilt the perch!

I agree on wishing for a slightly angled perch, but it's still a lovely portrait with the snow on the branch, the great depth of field all the way down to the tail, and the upraised crest.

I wish my little backyard was so productive ! Sweet profile shot and liking the fine detail, eye is very nice too, dof is perfect i think with the whole tail in focus as well. Agree the perch being a little more angled would be nice

A very nice setting with the snow, Bill.
Attractive muted color and very nice IQ with the 80-400 and relatively high iso for the D7000.
    Your PP is impressive.

Hi Bill, I always feel that winter BG's sets off the subjects so well, and you havent disappointed here. Great pose with the raised crest, good DOF, colours pop, and just love the snow covered perch. Im fine with the perch being horizontal.

Very nice wintery background. I like the snow on the perch. The cardinal definitely could be presented brighter. Image really could have used some fill flash work.
I like the positioning of the subject in the frame, excellent head angle, and overall composition.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Here's a repost with her a bit brighter. I had persuaded myself that she really did look pretty dark in reality on a dull day such as this was; but some brightness has helped. Yes Shawn, perhaps some fill flash next time.
