    Default Power!

The power of a 10' wave crashing into the surf is quite a site to see. It's even more exciting when it hits the pier that you are standing on. One more from The Outer Banks (I can't make myself use OBX )

Beautiful idea to use a slow shutter!! It worked very well here to emphasize the movement of the wave.

Michael, I love the subtle colors and the feeling of power. It's an odd mix of softness from the blur and the implicit violence of the wave - I like that I've been planning a trip to the Outer Banks - got any thoughts on good times to go vs bad. I assume the summer is not good because of tourists?

    Thanks ladies.

Cheryl, I've only been to the Outer Banks twice, both times in the winter. The first time was in November, the surf was up, Hatteras Light had just been moved, and I was shooting slide film. I was with a coworker and we had driven out to Durham for a training. We decided to go see Hatteras, the Wright Brothers, and Washington, DC on the way home Needless to say none of those things are on the way. Since that time I have had the Outer Banks on my mind.

From my limited perspective, the off season is probably the best time to go. We drove from south of Cape Hatteras Light (Cape Point) all the way to the Virginia state line (not all in one day) and I couldn't get over the number of vacation rentals that had been built in the last 10 years. There is something like 2% or 3% occupancy during the off season. I think I'm remembering that right. Anyway, the locals described the island as a zoo during the tourist season. It's good money for them but apparently it's unbelievably busy. If even half of the rentals are full I imagine that it is very crowded. Conversely, it was very peaceful when I was there.

Hi Michael, I like this image a lot! The power and motion of the water really comes through thanks to the slow shutter speed and the placement of the wave in the frame. Big thumbs up!

Wonderful composition. I feel I'm right there. Your shutter speed was perfect, capturing just the right mix of detail and smoothness. Love the composition and subtle colors. Well done. What is OBX?
