Itty bitty Brown Thornbill { golf ball birds as I like to call them }.......photographed one morning on my last trip interstate in a very arid region of Australia.

Self crit = dof too shallow, bad head turn, bad profile pose, dull lighting..............but still cute and worth keeping I think

You're being too hard on yourself! Super-cute little thing! Its shape begs for a square-ish crop, which gets rid of some of the OOF perch and empty space at the top. The soft lighting works well for me.

    Phil:

Good comments from Diane. He certainly does have some character, and the eye is really nice.

Be sure to include your camera/lens/processing details so we can see what you were working with.

    cheers

oops, sorry about that....I usually always include the camera info etc, not sure what I was thinking, I'll blame it on the high temps and humidity here at the moment and my brain is fried lol

    Canon 7D + 50 f4 + 1.4 x TC.....700mm, f5.6, 1/1000, ISO 400....BASIC EDIT......slight selective sharpen, slight brightness increase, slight noise reduction to backdrop, small crop....tripod mounted shot

The light looks fined to me and it is a little fuzz ball!
I like the eye and the perch.

I like this Phill, soft light, ruffled feathers and in-your-face look of the bird is surely kinda cute!

Hi Phil, I feel the HA is fine as posed, and love the wind swept plumage. Comp wise, I would take off both top and bottom, and create a landscape comp. Sweet BG.

Great looking little bird. Critical parts are in focus, but yes, some DOF might have helped. Without it, I'd agree with Diane's crop suggestion.

Thanks Stuart, I originally cropped to a landscape aspect. but then chose the one posted......but both work for me and this is what I originally cropped to below

And must add as well that I labelled this image incorrectly, it is actually a Chestnut-rumped Thornbill as opposed to Brown Thornbill

Beautiful image Phil, of a very cute little bird. Love the blue eye. I think the HA is fine, and the OOF BG is terrific. Well done.
