Default Great Gray Owl - Concentration

The winter of 2012-13 has been an Great Gray Owl year. On Rockliffe Parkway in my city, there are 4 Great Grays that have been hunting and overwintering. One day last week I spent an afternoon with them. The image below is from that afternoon....I used Nik Color Effects to bring out some of the colors. I also the masked the owl and applied a gussian blur to the background. I added a tail feather that was missing.

My Wife and I are on our way to the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, for a much needed break from winter. I can honestly say I have had enough snow, especially after this last storm. Play a little golf and try to find some endemics from the area.

With any luck they'll have Wi-fi...

Looks great, Paul! I sure would love to get into some Great Gray photography! It's been a long time since the last time I've seen one! Have a great getaway!

Paul, this almost looks like a painting. It's beautiful - I love the posture and concentration, the pentrating eyes, the composition and the background is perfect for the image. Have a well-deserved warm vacation

The subtle lighting in this image is wonderful. It feels a bit "ghosty" and very appropriate for the Great Gray. Also a fabulous position for the owl with the wings & tail feathers spread out. The eyes may seem small but they capture your attention easily.

Don't blame you for leaving winter, I leave for Hawaii on Tuesday!

Perfect title. The owl looks fantastic-- wings spread, prey in sight. The subdued colors do give it a mysterious feel. What do you think about adding a bit of contrast of brightness to the owl? Excellent shot. Have fun in the sun.
