    Default 1200mm and ISO 10000

I spent an evening trying to photograph a barn owl, the owl didn't show up until the sun was behind the hills. On my way back to the car I took some snap shots for fun, and I processed one frame to see what comes up. Not bad given that it was taken in almost darkness, I could barely track the owl in the finder as it was quite dark. More impressive is the 1DX AF performance with 600 II+ 2X TC at such low light. The MK4 could never do this. Anyways, not a brilliant shot in poor light but just showing what is now possible. Of course this is not going to make a large print or anything like that but for online presentation I find it acceptable.

It's a superb flight shot. Astonished about the camera's performance at ISO 10000.

Wow! ISO 10,000! The combination of your skills and the capabilities of the 1DX and 600 mm + 2.0x generated remarkable results. So sharp, and so little noise! Best evidence I have seen to date of the low-light capabilities of the 1DX. From a purely ascetic standpoint, the orange streak in the BG is not what you would hope for, but it is interesting how well the BG colors complement the owl's colors. Beautiful wing-up composition.

It's really a remarkable image, Arash, and deserving of display for artistic merit as well as technical prowess. (Yours and the camera's) The bg colors are lovely as is the hint of light in his eyes and fuzz around his disk. TFS.

That's amazing for an ISO setting in the 5 digit range. I'm particularly impressed at how well defined the colors are in such low light. Arash, since the intent is to show off the ISO capabilities of the 1DX, can we assume that you did not do any noise reduction in post?

    Thanks for sharing,
    Grant

Of course I did noise reduction, noise is there in RAW with any camera however with the 1DX the high SNR allows you to remove the noise while preserving detail at these insane ISOs compared to other bodies that I have owned.

    Thanks everyone

    I think it is gorgeous.
I am viewing it on an Ipad, where the resolution pretty much eliminates any noise and it looks fantastic.
I would think it would print nice also.
    Great work!

I think this is a beautiful shot on its own merits -- no excuses need be made. A very ethereal feeling to it. But also a fine example of the merits of the camera and the photographer.

Arash, the new cameras are opening up newer areas...like extreme low light high SS flight photography :-) The ability to shoot at 1/2000 in such light is something people could have only dreamt of few years back. IQ is pretty good. This is a good candidate for a 'guess ISO?' game.

Holy smoke! Natural light owl in flight. That's a superb shot that was not possible with older technology. And this is a beautiful shot in the esthetic sense.
