    Default Desert Elephant Trek

Another image of the Desert Elephants taken in Damaraland, Namibia in August 2012. I thought this showed the vast areas they cover and the habitat.

    Canon 5D3
    70-200 II @ 100mm
    1/1250
    f6.3
    ISO 400
HH from safari vehicle, cropped to pano to eliminate uninteresting fg, luminosity mask, levels, curves, selective color adjustments, sharpened in CS5.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Happy New year Rachel. Nice to see you trying out a different composition, very morkelesque . I like the depth in this image with the slightly offset Elephants and rolling hillside.

Something to think about.... Over the holidays I have been experimenting with stacking images to improve DOF and feel that this image would have been stronger if you took a second image focussing on the trees in the background and then blended the two together. I do find the vegetation in front of the leading elephant a little distracting, looks just a little smudged and could be improved with increased DOF.

I find the sharp veg in the LHS draws my attention towards the softer veg in the background.

    Good luck for 2013.

Hi Rachel, I like the composition and choice off crop, it all works for me.

A very gentle image and I think it's because the subject isn't the dominating feature, it's just a 'part' of the whole composition, if that makes sense. I thought it would look better to have more depth in the distant hills and sky, but wrong, the very hint and softness I think works in balance to the mid to FG areas as presented.

If it's pano I wonder if it should be 1024 x 512, but at the end of the day it works. Perhaps a little lift to 250 on the Levels RH slider?????

Thanks Jamie and Steve. Jamie - I must not have viewed the image fit to screen after resizing for web because my watermark is in a strange place and I thought I had masked out the sharpening on the veg.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Here's a repost with Steve's suggested levels adjustment and also cleaning up the masking on the sharpening for web.

    Thanks again,

    Hey Rachel,
I thing this turned out very nicely! Excellent position on the ele and the tweak really made a difference....slight but improved and gave a bit of pop. Pano crop was an excellent choice as well as this really suits the image. Very nicely done!

Classically composed/framed and nice soft hues due to the overcast light.
    Repost rocks.
Thanks for sharing! I should make a plan to see these ele's someday...

Thanks Morkel, yes you should head to Damaraland for the Desert Eles but also you'd love the landscape opportunities. Also there are desert adapted lions and rhinos as well. I saw the former but not the latter. The lions were very skittish and I have record shots only but still a thrilling sighting.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Thanks Rachel. I once heard about a guy who got a film shot years ago of a maned desert lion on the desert-beach with the Atlantic ocean behind him. Now THAT is a dream shot...
