From a while back and one from a series I took of these colorfull birds feeding on some garden flowers....not from my garden. These birds are so darn hard to get near to, presumably as they stand out boldly in their environment and are no doubt easy prey for cats and foxes here, so they are understandably very nervous.

Hid behind another tree to take the shot from approx 30 feet away, hand held image using the tree trunk for some vertical support. Cloned out some leaves bottom and right hand side of bird, too smooth now imo....but ih ? Added some extra canvas on bottom and rhs and cropped to vertical. Selective sharpen, strong background noise reduction

    Canon 7D + 500 f4...f7.1, 1/250, ISO 800, -0.3EV, flash used

Phil, killer BG for sure. The eye is sharp, however, I find the quality is not there, the feathers look soft. Could be due to the crop or the 1/250. Also, the Red looks overblown.

Lovely shot Phil - these guys can be hard to get close to - well done! The reds do look a tad hot on my monitor,
    Cheers, Greg

the pose and BG are both great, I like the perch too. I agree with Troy that it's a bit soft, I think the detail is there just need to sharpen more, and yes the red channel is blown and should be tamed during RAW conversion.

    Well done, TFS

So colourful bird and lovely BG. Reds have been mentioned. Sharpness looks good to my eye but may be I don't have a sharp eye! :)
