I haven't seen a redpoll posted for a few days so thought I would put one up as a reminder of what a great finch season it has been.

Canon 1D Mark IV, 500mm f/4L II, ISO:800, f/5.6@1/400, Manual, evaluative. Haliburton, Ontario.

    All C&C welcome and appreciated.

This is a very nice image, Dan, full of details. The colors work great together and the snow is really working for me. I have attached an alternate crop for your review which take the bird out of the middle and allows the eye to focus better on your.

    Thoughts?

Love the environment. Cool looking bird. Either crop works for me.

    Dan:

Looks like you got some great fill off the snow, which always gives a wonderful lighting effect for this type of picture.

Interesting options on the crop. I was OK with the original, as there was much more distance from the head to the right side of the frame, than the tail to the left side.

Marina's crop works well also, but I might be tempted to go all the way to pano, with a bit more off the top as well, at the risk of recentering it a bit vertically. Always fun to look at crops. I often do the original, let the image stew for a day or two, and look at the crop a second time.

I am prone to panos because of all my waterfowl!

    Cheers

First, that is one dandy male bird...great coloration! I like the falling snow too.
I prefer the repost in regards to composition. I don't think I can do a good job explaining
why....it just looks better to my eye. The head angle could be better imo. The bill gets a little
    lost in the face here.

Excellent details, pose and eye contact. I love the winter mood captured.
I'd crop from the top a bit but not from the bottom. I typically avoid having a perch coming straight out of a corner.

Really nice image and the perch is at a pretty cool angle for me. I really like the snow too dan. I prefer marina's crop from the bottom but personally would leave still a tad more room on the left
