OK.....I'm a flash junkie! I'm always trying to push my knowledge of flash so I had the idea to try to do some stroboscopic (multi flash bursts) photography in macro.
I used fishing line to hang the shell from the ceiling ......manually focused on the shell.....shut off all the lights in a darkened room ..then had good friend Nick Palmieri pull the shell up and release it parallel to the sensor plane and the flash fired 3 times during the long exposure. A number of takes and this is the result.
Had to remove a bit of the visible line in PP'ing.
    ISO 800 @ f/22 for 2 sec.

Wow Roman - this looks great. Very creative and expertly done! The pano crop and black background work well and the white border is a nice touch.

Roman you are the main man when it comes to imaginative natural history photography, for me this image is just superb. I like the arrangement and the presentation, the exposure is spot on, I am surprised the shell did not twist around as it was lowered, the plane for each image is consistent, almost identical from one to the next. I look at it and think boy I wish I had thought of that.

Excellent work - nautilus shells have a special place for me (have one tattooed, I'm that obsessed) - and this represents the art they are perfectly. Interesting concept and perfect execution!

    Simply beautiful.

I do not quite understand the "pull and release" bit.

Hey Bobo, the shell was hanging by a thread from above. We pulled the shell up towards the ceiling keeping tension on the thread so it would swing like a pendulum when released. Hope this clarifies it.

Very creative Roman. I like it a lot because of its geometric properties. Great detail.
