A white pelican (duh) taken today on my new pontoon boats maiden voyage with Diane Chenault. I probably should have paid more attention to controlling the whites but I was preoccupied with trying to chase them down and positioning the boat and all the other stuff acquainting yourself with something new. Will only improve shooting from a boat I suppose.

Great pose and I also like the composition and agree with your comment regarding the whites. They look a bit overexposed. It would have been great if the pelican were flying towards you.

Do you have more room below to add to prevent the reflection from being just clipped ay the edge? I like the wing-down position, and of course the splash.

Fantastic action photo Mike, love the water splash. Indeed the only small nit here are the hot looking whites.

Love the splash and especially the wing position but the whites are way over-exposed. It looked as if it was fairly bright... Why ISO 640. How did you determine your exposure?

I choked plain and simple. I was more preoccupied with other things with it being my first morning out on the boat then paying attention to my settings. ISO is from the previous evening when I was photographing my lab chasing the cows on the ranch.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and observations.

Here is a way to avoid choking. As soon as you pick up your camera to photograph in a given situation, simply take one image and take a look at the histogram... This will usually tell you if you are miles off. Also, another good habit is to check the following as soon as you pick up your rig: ISO, Mode, Exposure Compensation, Drive, etc.

Think you made a great self-critique (about the whites). Great action and love the splashing water.
