My wife and I spotted this fellow perched in a tree as we walked the paths of the Bailey Tract of Ding Darling last November. I set up and waited patiently for him to fly, willing him to go right where he would catch the nicer light. But of course he flew left into the sun, so the PP involved some s/h, burning and dodging. And a bit of crop to offset some canvas addition for composition. C&C always appreciated.

Don't you hate it when they don't do what you want?
The light looks nice to me.
I rarely level in flight photos, but in this case, I think having the bird parallel would look better for me.

The tripod was leveled up before he flew, so I didn't think about rotating the image. This was shot just after he dropped out of the tree. But I did try a bit of rotation in this repost, and I'll agree it does look better.

Good suggestion by Dan and what a difference it makes. It looked a bit awkward but didn't know how to verbalize what I was seeing.

Nice capture. The subject is exposed well and looks nice and sharp. Like the wing position and pose. Looks better with the rotation. Well done.

I could go with either one. Good wing position and an interesting BG. Did you work on the eye as the bottom edge of the pupil looks odd to me.

    Hey Bill,
I didn't mind the OP......so could go with either. You brought out the details nicely and the BG is muted enough that it adds to the overall image. Nicely done!

Thanks Daniel. Your sharp eye always amazes me. There was a bit of nictitating membrane that I doctored. Looking at the blown up image, it seems I may have been a little careless in that area.

Here's a repost with a little more care given to the eye doctoring. Otherwise no change.
