    Default Chobe Clash

Hi guys, just back from a quick trip to the Chobe river in Botswana. We witnessed this interaction between two young hippos (play-fighting) in a lovely setting yesterday at sunset.

We tested out the new Wild Eye photographic boat and I can't wait to return when I guide a safari there in May. We have exclusive use of a houseboat that can moor deep into the Chobe National Park on the Namibian side, and it was a treat to experience this magnificent part of Africa in this way.

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II + 1.4x TC @ 700mm
    f4.0 @ 1/500 SS @ ISO-4000
    EV +0.3
Slight crop from sides and bottom

PS: I leveled for the riverbank as we were shooting directly perpendicular to it...

I like this a lot mate, great colors and the dusk colors are great.. I feel it needs a CCW rotation, but the water level looks fine. Probably due to the horizon line and water vegetation line look like they are sloping. Lovely stuff!

Hi Morkel, I like the interaction, but would prefer the elephant not to be so central, as I feel it conflicts with the playful Hippos. You were there, so you know the colours, but I might have thought they were not so vibrant, especially the grass? You were correct to go for the river bank for the level, but visually it might need a little CCW rotation, going by the eye.

Morkel - nice interaction between the hippos and the ellie is a bonus. I will leave the colors to others as I am viewing on an uncalibrated machine right now. I agree on the need for slight ccw rotation. Looking forward to seeing more from the Chobe area.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Great image Morkel, I agree with Steve with the vibrant colors. For the elephant, you should have told him to go more to the right, but as usual, they do not listen

    Thanks for your feedback, guys.
It really was vibrant and lush, especially in the overcast weather .
Here's a repost with the greens toned down some and the rotation applied, but to me it still looks best as in the OP...

Hi Morkel, I might have kept the original colours and just toned down the greens to the RP. The rotation is, I agree, too severe, something like 0.50 CCW I feel is about right, it's just a visual thing. Trust me, your eyes quite often are far more accurate than a ruler, at times.

    Hi Morkel,
besides the kind of not ideal positioned elephant, like the layered action shot with the hippos placed just right in the frame.
I prefer the colors of the RP, too saturated for my eyes the OP.But you have been there.
Re rotation i think half way between the two.

    Thanks gents.
I love the placement of the ellie for the following reasons:
    1. it's unconventional - sometimes we get stuck in a rut trying to conform our images to all the "rules"
    2. had he been off to one of the sides, you won't get the impression that he's watching the fight, rather minding his own business

    Just my own 2c :)

    Hey Morkel,
I made my assessment before I read the comments and while I feel the green could go down a few points in the OP.......I feel that is so minor......I wouldn't change a thing! I even like the location of the ele as there is just the hint of separation and I like the way he goes OOF and adds to the overall scene. This works for me on every level!!!

    Hi Morkel,
I prefer the OP as the rotation on the RP is excessive and distracting to the eye more so than the horizon.
    TFS and best wishes,
    Mark.
