    Default Balancing Act

Shot this morning at a local pasture. I had never been here before, but was told by a fellow photographer that the cranes came in the hundreds every morning. He sure was right! The light wasn't great, and the cranes were far, but it was definitely an experience to hear and see so many cranes at one location. I was able to shoot a short video (first one with the D800), and here is a clip of the action.

This image took a while to capture, as I was waiting to isolate the lone bird. He gave me a brief second of action, before resuming his feeding. IQ isn't the best, but I like the dynamics of the image.

    Shooting info:
    Nikon D800 | 500 f/4 VR + 2x
    1000 mm | 1/500 | f/8 | ISO 3200

Comments, critiques, and suggestions are welcomed.

    Miguel:

Very interesting pose, def. lends itself to a vertical comp. I know you are concerned about the IQ, but even though I like small in frame images, I think there is too much space above.

It is quite an experience listening to the cranes come in. I have been around at least several thousand at one time in Indiana, and wow, it is really loud.

    Cheers

This is certainly a different pose and composition. Nice job isolating him. While I really like your concept here I think you need to crop a little tighter as I want to see more of the bird.

Thanks for the comments. Here is a bit of a tighter crop. Not too happy with it, but I do think it is better than the original post.

I prefer the OP to the RP. I would take only a small amount off the top if it were mine. I find it quite unique, and I really like what you were going for. I would like to see more details in the SHC in the original. Not sure if it's b/c it's so small in the frame.

I'm really digging the image design on the OP. I can see why some feel there is to much space above and a bit of a crop would work but for me I really like this unconventional comp. The bird itself looks a little flat though and a bit more TLC on it would make it shine.

Hi Miguel, yes to a vertical comp working with this pose from the crane. I like the hint of OOF grasses in the FG, and agree, maybe a touch of contrast on the crane will make it pop. I prefer your OP too, but with just a touch off the top.

    Hi Miguel,
I like the OP with maybe a sliver off the top.
The bird needs more contrast and if you have DE I would run that on the bird.
An unusual pose with the foot sticking up. Something different which I like
