    Default Rainbow Bee-eater

A bit of a rarity in my part of Australia, and a treat to find any at all, this one found about 500klms from home on a remote back road along with a few others.

Canon 7D + 500 f4.....,f6.3, 1/800, ISO 250, no flash......hand held shot with dark Mallee Forest backdrop.....cloned out one large vertical branch on the left, selective sharpen, contrast tweak and noise reduction to background

    Wonderful details on the bird
This is very close to the Small green bee eater we get here in india
The red in the eye is something i love.

Like Vishal mentioned, this is so similar to the small green bee eater found in India, but the blues add that extra sparkle. With the flash not used what was the source of light. A nice overall pic, tfs.

    Phil:

Nice eye indeed, lovely light, interesting perch, well exposed.

BG very nice, as is the comp.

If you had time, trying to get a few frames with more DOF would have been nice.

I always keep reminding myself to work the scene, don't take the same image over and over again (so I try to vary my settings for different looks, effects)

    Cheers

Hi Phil, nice and sharp, and you have brought out the detail nicely. Colours look spot on, and with those colours, he certainly pops from the darker BG. I agree with Randy, more DOF would have rendered more detail on the perch.

I did not notice the dof issue before reading the comments...with the face taack sharp that is good enough for me! Nice BG, but as posted there is some funky stuff in it...possibly due to compression. Wish the tail was visible. Excellent colours, perch. Comp looks good/.

Beautiful bird, excellent feather details and texture. Nice HA,fantastic colours, good exposure. I would wish for a nicer perch for this beauty but if it was not a setup, then you take what you got.
Great picture, Phil, it was worth the 500 km drive.

I like the details on the bird and you get some eye contact as well. Getting a tropical IRS in the open is a gift and is way more difficult than most here in the states realize. I don't mind the perch being off as the angle of it would make it impossible to attain. A very nice shot of a bird I hope to see some day.

Phil a beautiful image, love the composition and exposure. I would however take a peek at the area immediately beneath the black face strip, it looks just a little on the hot side to me and I would also consider adding a little black to the stripe -( not much).
