    Hi Guys

I took this image in the carpark of a hotel I stayed at while working in Maryland late last year. I was heading off to work early one morning when I saw a his bird sweep past and land in the top of a tree. I stopped and noticed the light was good and the bird looked great so I took the chance to run back up to my room, Mount the 500 and 1.4 on my camera and charge through the hotel lobby again like an idiot, expecting my college sitting in the car to tell me it 'flew away minutes ago so lets get to work'... Well to my surprise it dident and i took many images, the attached is on of the better. Can someone please tell me what it is?

    1D4 + 500F4 + 1.4 TC.
Hand held although I made use of signposts etc to steady where possible.
    1/1000 sec @ F9 ISO 1250, Man exp , eval metering.
The image is about 80% of full frame

    thanks for looking

I liked your story, and I think many of us can relate to the excitement of such a bird sighting with camera gear stowed elsewhere! Vertical was the logical way to compose the image. Exposure is spot on, and details look good (although critical focus is not on the face). More room below would be nice and I do wish for a not-so-steep angle...but this is what you were handed.

This looks like a young Red-tailed Hawk to me.

Thanks guys for the ID and comments..

Dan, this is the full frame, I cropped the bottom to reduce the OOF branches lower LH corner... Interested to know what your choice would have been...

Did a little research to make sure this was a juvie Red-shouldered Hawk. Lovely capture with nice light and environment. Agree critical focus is not on face. It is helpful to focus on the eye and then recompose for composition. I like both images but the RP is a cut above the OP.

Right from the star I was wanting more room below but seing the original Im not sure If the oof branches would work and i am curious how it would look. I would definately tighten it up a little from the op especially the excess room ut top. if this were mine. Nice image BTW and the head turn was just enough to work for me
