    Default Loon In the Rain

I went out in my Kayak today in search of the loons. There are 3 mature adults on this pond and I found them all within 1 hour of slowly paddleing around the lower half near the launch area. As I put, in 2 bass boats were pulling up. My hopes sank about finding them. But I tried to keep positive and kept to my plan. I will paddle out about 100 yards from shore and play my tape of loons calls. They will hear it from all the way to the other end of the pond, even though a person on shore cannot.

When they approached one broke off from the group and kept swimming closer and closer, till he was about 30 feet away to my left. He would dive, then pop up, look at me and dive again. He dove 4 times and re-appeared to my right.

Since there was no sun, moderate clouds and a slight mist, I wanted to see what the images would look like. I like the image for the conditions I was under. I am just not sure it is light enough. You really can't compare this one to a fully lit up loon in golden light. And I plan on getting some more of those in the weeks to come.

I have been encouraged to go out in clouds, rain, sun, wind, no matter what and try to find something different. What do you think of this image? Please don't be shy and leave a comment, good or what to improve.

I like it Grady! Only suggestion would be to crop some off the bottom and the left of the image. Here's a repost in which I boosted the shadows and applied a little selective sharpening. Then a recrop.

Doug's crop was my idea when I first saw the image, Good thinking out of the box and using what's available, it works well :)

Hi Grady I like the re post a lot !!!

Glad you will be going out after them in different light conditions With the one presented I think some plus compensation would have been in order? Do like the feel but think the image could have been a little brighter !!!! Good luck with the loons !!!!!

One of my very favorite birds. I do think you might want to lighten this one up a bit.

    I like your second re-post, but perhaps somewhere in-between yours & Doug's.
