Hi Steve - Looks good at ISO 1600 with the 7D. The straight on pose and crop to vertical work well here, nice color tones and the grass in the mouth adds to it.

nice detail and IQ here Steve, the 7D sensor loves having the best quality glass in front of it - I saw a marked increase in clarity, contrast and sharpness when I went to one of the better primes (in your case the 400 DO does the trick!)

...usually I prefer the eyes to be level in a shot like this but here I quite like the 'quirky' angle...
dodging the shadow areas on the face/nose would bring out a bit more detail there?

Thanks for the comments and suggestions Rachel and Morkel. Actually went back and darkened up the shadow areas, was looking a little too "recovered" for me. The posted version is on the edge for me.

Hi Steve, the quirky HA works for me, likewise the position in frame, nicely balanced. Love the soft tones in the BKG, compliments the richer darker colours of the subject. I would look at dropping the Magenta cast in the dark fur in the neck, likewise the Blue coming through on the nose, the black part.

    Hi Steve,
like the look of the elk within that portrait.
Well framed with good tonality , detail and contrast.Like the colors , besides the blue coming through.
I would keep the darkness in the fur, but io would try to bring those big eyes back to life by lightening them.

    Nice one

    Steve and Andreas,
Thanks for the comments. Could really notice the magenta on a different monitor, not so much on the home one (noticeable since mentioned). Did some tweaks and could see a difference, will keep in mind if/when reworked.
