Caught this doe as she was coming out of the woods on a cold, late afternoon back in early November. I think she was treading lightly keeping an eye out for over amorous bucks. 7D, 1-400L, f6.3, 1/200s, ISO 2000, HH, cropped some from bottom, top, and left (as viewed), processed in DPP and PSE 10.

    Hi Steve,
like the whole coloration and tones throughout the image.Position of the doe is working as well, like the different fields of colors and tones really separated .
Nice head on pose of the deer.

But the image looks kind of smudgie ?, maybe due to high ISO on the 7D .

Hi Steve, great to see you back posting again.

I really like the way the setting gives an almost 3D layering to the image which adds depth to the image. The pose and position in frame also works nicely, love the head on look to camera. I can see what Andreas is referring to, did you need to lighten any parts of the image ie BKG/FG as that might have enhanced the high ISO? Although viewing on the laptop, so not ideal, but could a 50% Luminosity adjustment layer help, but the colours do seem to portray the time of day.

Thanks for the feedback Andreas and Steve. Smudgie would be a good word Andreas. I see it especially in the shoulder of the deer. Went back and looked at the RAW and my conversion. Have the following three excuses/reasons for the IQ of the posted version. 1) Both background and foreground trees are slightly blurred in the original. BG trees are probably a good 20-30 ft back, FG tree about 8-10 foot in front of the deer so I think DOF probably comes into play. 2) The posted version was created from an already saved web sized JPG saved at 80% quality. It too was saved at around 80% and I think I may have hit that with an additional round of NR. Not the best workflow I know, but I sometimes will make three or four copies with different tweaks before I decide on one or delete them all. 3) I usually like my pics a little less sharp and contrasty than most of the ones posted here and tend to process them towards that end. Perhaps a sign of a frustrated artist/painter inside. Despite my excuses, I agree with your comments, see what you're seeing, and have already deleted my converted TIFF so the RAW may be worked at another time.

Hi Steve - I feel your pain on the 7D and high ISO, exposure really has to be spot on. I think your own self-assessment as well as the comments by Andreas and Steve covered the issues and causes. Still a nice look at the doe with a pleasing pose.

    Rachel

I do very much like the 3D effect of this image and the environmental feel. While something appeared off when I first viewed it, I was unable to articulate what I was seeing. Thanks to those who did b/c it helps me so much.

The 1D4's have really come down in price! My friend just sold his which was in excellent shape for $2900.

Thanks for the comment Marina. Here's another version with a quick rework directly from the RAW. Has a little more detail in the fur.
