Here's another frame from our riveting encounter with this alpha male. This is pretty much full frame shot in portrait mode, had to rotate and crop very slightly - wish I had a wee bit more room at the bottom but don't feel it's a deal-breaker here. You can really get a feel for how low I was lying here.

I just posted my annual "best of" review of the past year's images on my blog. Would love for you to pop on over and let me know what you think.

    Techs:
    Nikon D3s with Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II + 1.4x TC @ 700mm
    f6.3 @ 1/320 SS @ ISO-5600
Light was low (overcast at sunset) so I went for a slower SS to get more DOF

    Hi Morkel,
like the image as all the others from that series.
Super low POV, just great.Colors works really nice for me, like wise the overall tonality.

Maybe the face can stand one more round USM, and if you have a bit more room on bottom and a bit less on top.
IQ just great for ISO 5600

Morkel - another nice one from the sighting. Great low pov and mid-stride pose. Pleasing bokeh and amazing IQ for the ISO.

A nice, "clean" photo both compositionally and IQ wise. Always great to revisit shots collected from an enjoyable and productive trip and relive the experience isn't it. Nice collection of favorites, always interesting to see which ones a photog will pick for their collection. BTW, congrats on the Editor's Pick HM on NPN.

Love the angle and pose here.....maybe a hair more room on the bottom but as I like tight crops....works for me. What makes this for me is the super low eye contact with clean BG! I don't even mind the DOF falloff as the face is tack! Great use of the high ISO too!

You're killing me with the images you're nailing at ISO 5600!!! Love the low POV here, the colors and all the details. Seeing his teeth...a big plus!

I like everything, the stance the composition the exposure and the eye contact, I especially like the low angle, I really think this is special.

Thanks a lot, guys. Glad you enjoyed this one.
Like I said, I wish I framed a bit lower but in the rush of the moment I was happy to snap even some images. I had to take the converter off shortly after this image was taken - he came too close...

I've seen this one before and loved it, but wasn't aware of the ISO! I don't think even the new 1DX could manage this for us Canon sufferers.
As for the tight crop, I don't think it matters much since the line of the ground is higher behind the dog, giving an impression of a wider "base".
A superb and intense portrait, my favorite from your 2012 selection.
