This is a beautiful image, Alison. Great light, sharp, and great composition. You kept the details in the white snow, and maintained a catch-light in the bird's eye. Doing both at the same time is not easy. Well done!

    i Alison,

Very nice pose on this little lady and as stated above....nice job in getting the detail in the snow without a flash or sunlight! I would consider leaving more room on the left towards where the bird is looking and take a little off the right in composition.

Hi Alison, good lookback pose, and Ive always enjoyed a winter BG, and the snow certainly adds. Just a personal thing, but I find the crop too square. Taking a bit off the top, and adding to the left will give you a pleasant horizontal comp. Did you apply sharpening to the whole image?

Hi Alison, Welcome to BPN and have a great 2013. I am OK with the square crop here but would not mind more on our right. Overall image quality is suspect. Your file could have been much larger, up to 245 kb.

I like the pose and the exposure is good. For the repost I lightened the face considerably (with Tim Grey Dodge and Burn techniques), eliminated the green leaf above the head and in the crook of the neck with two Quick Masks with Layer Masks, and did some bill reconstruction. All as described in detail in Digital Basics.

Thank you Dennis and John. For me, pretty much a beginner this is probably the best image I have taken to date. Thank you Stuart and Arthur. I see that it indeed looks better with that leaf removed and lightened. I will look at cropping it with a little more left to the right. Thanks for the advice!

Nice image, Alison. I take your word that this bird is a female. I like Artie's repost, especially the improved eye/face.

I did think the subject was dark in the OP, and Artie's repost has brought it back to where it should be. Exposing correctly for the bird would have made you blow out the snow significantly...this is where fill-flash could have helped in-camera.

Beautiful bird and setting!! Have a great 2013!

    Very nice shot.
I really like the pose, great comp, and love the snow covered greens with just a bit of them showing.
    Really like Artie's repost.
    Well done.
