    Colin:

Very attractive bird, with good display of tail, well scaled perch, interesting eye.

Shooting angle a bit steep, wish the second branch didn't run behind the bird.

A touch of fill flash would have opened up the shadows a bit.

    Happy 2013 to you!

    Cheers

    Hi Colin,

Ditto Randy on the nice view of the tail and a neat bird. And the image is sharp with a good exposure. His remarks on the second branch and the the steep shooting angle are also spot on. But there are additional problems:

1-the mixed light with bits of bright sun on parts of the bird and the upper right BKGR is distracting.
2-the bird's head is turned well away and as a result, the eye is not well lit and seems rather distorted, i.e, not round.

In filtered light (sun and shade on the same subject) fill flash would not have helped. Using lots of flash--close to zero-- might have helped but my approach is usually not to push the button in those situations.

    Have a great 2013.

And happy 2013 back to you Randy. Thanks for the comment.

Shooting angle a bit steep that's interesting because I was actually dead level with the bird, it was high in a tree and I was in a building right beside.

I appreciate you comments Artie, and all the best for clicking in 2013. I accept your comment about not pressing the button. However there are exceptions IMO, these birds are near impossible to get a clean shot of. They spend all their time high in the canopy, generally searching for phasmids.

    Agree on the exceptions!

Hi Colin, Congrats on capturing this hard to get subject - one I am not familiar with at all. I agree with the composition/technical advice given above. I like the placement of the bird in the frame.
