Great image Jeff. There are a couple of leaves at the top that tend to draw my attention and I might try to darken the leaves at the bottom just a little but that might just be me.

David,
I appreciate the input and every opinion is important to me. I am trying to include more habitat in my pics and thought the leaves framed the subject. But to your point, including elements in the foreground can be subject - thanks for reviewing my work.
Jeff, the image is beautiful, and I love the berry in the bird's beak. I wondered why you decided to include so much to the left of the bird, as opposed to cropping some of it out. Was it to ensure a more interesting, "off-center" composition?

Wendy,
Great question IMO among the most challenging things a photography does is decide on subject placement. In this situation I used the grids and applied the rule of thirds (pushed it a bit as you noticed) plus wanted plenty of room for the bird to look into; also do not like images that are too tight. It is a bit subject and every photographer must find balance, it would be alright to cut a bit off as well. The fact that the background complimented the subject helped too; the rule of thirds is a composition method that helps the eye find balance in the frame.

Very good subject and composition. Tough lighting. The image looks soft on my monitor, and looks like too much NR, though I can't be sure. Was the image underexposed? regards~Bill.
Hi Jeff, I love these birds and nice to see that you got such a good opportunity to capture one. Nice use of the fill flash in these conditions! I like the exposure, color, and detail. Super background too. Excellent example of behavior adding interest!

Toughest of lighting conditions I say. But you made the best of it, great use of fill flash to ensure even lighting here. I also really like the HA, and how you got that berry in perfect position. The photo itself - although the bird has room to look into - may be a slight bit off-balance because on one side there is beautiful creamy negative space, and the other side there is the bird and its habitat. IMO, for a simple perch this composition works better, but as the perch is so busy in this case it makes the image look a little off balance. Could be just me though!!
Great catch. Waxwings are naturally very soft so that is not a concern as long parts of him which should be sharp are sharp imho.
Bobo,..
Great comments and you are correct the waxwings are naturally soft and do not not easily show detail!
I shot wide open - that tends to me my style and the light was very low,...
Nice shot Jeff, apart from the out of focus leaves I would have gone for a tad more sharpening around the head and beak area and a slightly smaller crop.
Always enjoy looking at pictures of Waxwings.
