This was the first cat we sighted in Africa . A lone lioness with only one eye .What could be the possible explanation for a lioness to stray alone ? Is it that it was pushed away from the pride after losing an eye ? or did it lose its eye while fighting with one of it's own ??

Camera : Canon 1D Mk III
    Lens : Canon 600mm f4 IS
    Aperture : f4
    Shutters : 1/250s
    Exp comp : + 0.33 EV
    Speed : ISO 1250

    Cheers ,
    Rakesh

Wish each one of you a Very Happy and a Prosperous New Year !!

Hi Rakesh - Happy New Year to you too. I like the pose, comp and the subtle tones here. Interesting that she doesn't look too much the worse for wear other than the eye so seems like she still is able to lead a good life. I wonder if her separation from a pride is recent.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Rakesh. Interesting lioness! I'm not sure they would kick her out for losing her eye...many lions have and there are quite a few alive and functioning well in prides with only one eye (Silvereye of Duba plains is an example).

I like the pose here and the soft light (overcast or twilight?). I do feel there's something strange on the tonal treatment here - did you do some kind of HDR toning or did you lift midtones a bit too much perhaps? Perhaps it's just that the luminosity on the lion isn't keeping in line with the luminosity on the surrounding grass for me - perhaps too much dodging then?

Hi Rakesh, I like the pose, with the head on look and the position being off centre within frame, although I think you could move the whole crop up a fraction?

I agree the colour does look a little off, plus the Histogram looks quite compressed. Lifting the mid tones 50/55 helps the contrast, moving the colour balance in part more cyan than red and just getting the whites more in line does make a difference IMHO.

Interesting it's the left eye, as Morkel mentioned, Silvereye's injury is also on the left too.

    Hi Rakesh,
nice head on pose with a good placement in the frame, shame a bout her eye, but thats life , sometimes tough for these creatures.

Overall the image looks a bit flat and colors looks too much on the red side, for me.

Little tweaks in contrast and tonality , could help.

    Hey Rakesh,
Happy New Year to you too! Agree with the above assesments but an interesting and unusual image!

    Rakesh,
I kind of like the "ghostly" look of this image (although I think I see a slight halo around the rump). Interesting to me that the whole left side of the face from the whiskers to the ear appear to have recovered from some previous damage.

A clouded eye can be caused by an infection, which in itself can be an indication of an underlying cause (FIV, TB). However, in this case it seems it has been caused by something else, as the whole left side of the face seems to have been damaged at some point in her life. In any way it is no reason to be kicked out of a pride.

I have cheated here and I looked at previous comments. Its been too long since I visited East Africa but the image looks great to me, I like the colours! I like the image the detail in the lion is good, I would suggest a minor crop at the bottom.
