    Default Female Red-Browed finch

Another shot from a very hot day around an old farm dam not far from home, a stick about 4 feet high stuck at an angle into the mud on the waters edge made a perch for the birds to land on prior to going in for a drink. Taken by concealing myself, somewhat uncomfortably within a thorn bush on the upper edge of the dam with a bit of camo cloth to hide camera and tripod.

    Canon 7D + 500 f4 + 1.4 x TC.....700mm, f6.3, 1/125, ISO 250, no flash used, small crop, selective sharpen and slight reduction to backdrop { yes, higher ISO would produce faster shutter speeds, but I constantly struggle with my noise on my troublesome 7D }

I'm curious to know how you identified this juvenile as a female?

Looks like focus point just missed the eye and landed on the shoulder.

Lovely bird and a new species for me so I cannot comment on sex, age.
I was always happy with my 7D as long as I stayed under ISO 800 and made sure my histogram was well to the right. I would have liked a bit more DOF for the tail.
Would sharpen the head a bit more.
Good comp and it complements the perch. Good BG as well,
    Gail

I too, think you needed more DOF. If the tail were behind, it would not matter as much, but in this pose, I think it needs to be in focus.
Another excellent new species for me though, I always appreciate that.

Cool bird and nice BG and perch. Probably could use another round of NR on the BG. Think the eye could be a bit sharper. TFS

    Very nice shot.
Great pose, I really like the background, and nice perch.
Another round of sharpening on the head would be great as it looks a tad softer than the body.
    Well done.

Simply because I didn't refer back to my field guide, so yes, I think it's a juvenile.....so....nothing you like about it ?

Thank you kindly for the reply, PhilCook. I wasn't sure if you had some other info regarding sex(perhaps some behaviour that you witnessed) so I was very eager to learn anything you may have had to share.

Hi Phil, I like the various colours on the finch, and a good pose against a smooth BG. I agree, a touch more sharpening on the head wont harm. With regards to noise, Im not familiar with the 7D, but a lot of members shoot ISO 800 without any issues. Are you shooting ensuring that your histogram is to the right.

Phil, you have a really good shot there. I would suggest you reduce the overall brightness of the bird and a tiny bit more sharpening on the head. (I have tried it on the jpeg using curves and it makes a significant difference, I am sure on the raw it will look excellent).
Regards noise, I have a 7D and agree with the tips mentioned.

Excellent bird, beautifully coloured perch, and I love the BG. I agree the focus seems to be on the shoulder. Good job with your setups in the hot weather...

DOF has been mentioned, so was the active focus point. Otherwise it it a very nice shot, Phil.

I like the pose, perch, bird and BG. I agree with more sharpening and DOF. Look forward to seeing more Phil.
